5 Secrets to Get Your Car Warranty Claim Covered

by Gregory Nelson

The funny thing about car warranty claims is that issues don’t usually escalate over which parts are covered and which parts aren’t. Those are questions that the car warranty owner can answer very easily by looking at their contract. But what I’ve found is that people just aren’t following the proper procedure for filing a claim.

While the process for filing a claim is different for every car warranty company, I’ve compiled a list of steps that will help you make sure the claim is covered:

  1. You are usually provided with a phone number or website where you can go to file a claim. By taking care of this step first, you will avoid any confusion or misunderstandings from the start.
  2. You are typically required to provide proof of the cars maintenance, including receipts from oil changes, etc. So make sure you have those on hand before filing the claim so you don’t get stuck with the bill afterwards.
  3. In most cases, you are free to take the vehicle to any licensed repair technician. However, make sure there aren’t any other specific guidelines, such as being ASE certified. In some cases, you will only be allowed to take the vehicle to a certain repair facility. If so, make sure you know where that is.
  4. Once you are at the repair location, ALWAYS have the technician contact your contract administrator for authorization BEFORE a repair is made.
  5. Once the repair is authorized, check whether you are required to pay first and then be reimbursed, or if the car warranty administrator will pay for the covered repairs directly.
